YGIS Volunteer Coordinator Stephen Jiang recently brought members of his youth team, Bridge Zhou, Hasshir Mehdi, Emily Cui, Alvis Zhang, Aurick Zhang, Katelyn Ma, and Vincent Ma, to volunteer at a community event hosted by MLA Nathan Ip.

The young volunteers helped with activities throughout the event, assisted community members, and worked together to support the event organizers. It was also an opportunity for them to meet local residents and gain hands-on experience in community service.

For Stephen, organizing youth volunteers is about giving young people opportunities to take responsibility and become more involved in their community. By participating directly, the team practiced communication, teamwork, and leadership while seeing how a local community event comes together.

YGIS encourages youth to contribute their time and skills to their communities. Through experiences like this, Stephen and his team are building their own leadership experience while making a positive contribution to the people around them.

This summer, YGIS Youth Leader Stephen Jiang attended a month Summer Camp in Spain, where he lived and learned alongside young people from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

Throughout the camp, Stephen participated in group projects, discussions, cultural exchange, and activities focused on social and global issues. As shown in the photos, students worked together on topics such as equality and shared their ideas through creative group presentations. These experiences encouraged Stephen to listen to different perspectives, express his own ideas, and work with people whose backgrounds and experiences were different from his own.

The camp was also about building friendships and becoming part of an international community. By studying, living, and spending time together, Stephen learned that meaningful connections can develop even among young people who come from very different places.

After returning to Edmonton, Stephen hopes to bring this experience back to YGIS and his local community. He wants to share what he learned with Edmonton youth, introduce them to international learning opportunities, and lead activities that encourage teamwork, cultural understanding, community service, and youth leadership.

For Stephen, the Spain experience does not end in Spain. Through YGIS, he hopes to turn what he learned into action and use his experience to serve and inspire other young people in Edmonton.

On Saturday afternoon, August 22, 2026, YGIS members Katelyn and Vincent volunteered at Edmonton’s Food Bank, spending the afternoon giving back and supporting local families.

Katelyn described the experience as truly empowering, being able to work towards helping local families and our people.” Through a hardworking afternoon, she learned “so much about the thought and process that goes into making the Food Bank into a reality.” She looks forward to “working with The Edmonton Food Bank for another successful mission” and is grateful for the opportunity “to give a helping hand to our community.” As Katelyn beautifully put it, “At the end of the day, I’ve found that volunteering also comes with a high reward. Impact.” YGIS is proud of Katelyn and Vincent for turning their time and effort into meaningful community impact.

Before heading back to school, Youth Global Impact Society (YGIS) youth leader Stephen Jiang is giving back to the community by hosting a community gathering on Sunday, August 30. 4-8:30pm

The event will bring local families and friends together for an evening of food, music, and connection. The gathering will feature a potluck dinner, freshly grilled lamb skewers, live performances, and karaoke. Julie, who participated in Hunan TV’s Famous Teachers Have Great Students, will also perform.

For Stephen, organizing the gathering is an opportunity to put youth leadership into practice. By helping create a welcoming space for families to meet, reconnect, and enjoy time together, he hopes to strengthen relationships within the local community before the new school year begins.

YGIS encourages young people to take an active role in their communities through service, responsibility, and leadership. We are proud to see Stephen turn those values into action by bringing people together.

For eight days, YGIS youth leader Stephen Jiang, third from the left in the first photo, joined his team leaders for an outdoor survival training experience in the Rocky Mountains, stepping away from everyday comforts and learning to adapt to the challenges of the wilderness.

The experience required teamwork, responsibility, and persistence. From setting up camp and preparing meals to navigating the outdoors and handling unexpected challenges, each day gave Stephen opportunities to learn through experience and contribute to his team.

Eight days in the wilderness also meant learning to stay calm when conditions became difficult, support others, and take responsibility for the group.

At Youth Global Impact Society (YGIS), we believe leadership develops through action and service. Experiences like this help young people become more independent, work effectively with others, and learn what it means to be someone a team can rely on.

We are proud to see Stephen take on this challenge and bring what he learned back to his community.

Helping families build awareness and learn practical emergency preparedness skills

To improve community awareness and emergency preparedness among families, especially youth, the YGIS Youth Volunteer Organization hosted a free public workshop titled “Preparing Families for Natural Disasters.”

The workshop focused on common natural disasters that families may encounter in daily life, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding, strong winds, and extreme weather conditions. Participants learned about the potential impacts of different types of disasters, as well as essential safety measures to take before, during, and after such events.

A key focus of the session was family emergency preparedness, helping participants understand how to create a family emergency plan, prepare basic emergency supplies, identify safe sheltering strategies, and establish effective communication plans within the household.

“While natural disasters cannot always be prevented, being prepared in advance can help families respond more calmly and effectively in emergencies,” the organizers said. They hope that through youth-led community initiatives like this, more young people will gain practical safety knowledge and share it with their families and communities.

The event took place on August 15, 2026, from 4:30to 5:30PM at the Jasper Place Library Meeting Room and was led by YGIS Youth Leader Allen Cui

The workshop was offered as a free community event, and snacks were provided for participants. Youth were encouraged to actively engage in community service, while also developing responsibility, leadership skills, and stronger community connections.

On August 8, 2026, YGIS launched the first event of its Community Preventive Health Initiative — a community workshop on Family First Aid and CPR.

The workshop was led by 16-year-old Isabella with Stephen Jiang assisting with instruction and hands-on demonstrations. More than 20 community members participated, including 9 youth participants. People of different ages came together to learn practical first aid knowledge and skills, making this workshop a meaningful cross-generational community health education experience.

As a youth instructor certified by the Lifesaving Society as a FirstAid + CPR C Instructor/Examiner, Isabella led the main instructional content of the workshop. From recognizing emergencies and activating the emergency response system to CPR, AED use, and common first aid situations at home, she transformed the professional training and practical experience she has received into knowledge that is accessible and relevant to everyday families and communities.

Stephen actively supported the workshop through instruction, demonstrations, and participant interaction, working alongside Isabella to help participants better understand and practice essential first aid skills. Their teamwork also made this event a meaningful example of young people taking an active role in organizing and serving their community.

The workshop was not only about “knowing what to do.” More importantly, it aimed to help every participant develop an important mindset:

First aid skills should not belong only to healthcare professionals. They should be practical skills that every family and every community can learn and use.

This is also the purpose behind YGIS’s Community Preventive Health Initiative — to use the energy and knowledge of young people to bring health education, safety awareness, and practical skills into the community, helping more people develop the ability to prevent risks and respond effectively when emergencies occur.

For Isabella, this workshop was also much more than simply sharing knowledge.

Standing in front of the community, she took on the role of an Instructor and Community Educator. She was responsible for organizing the material, explaining professional knowledge, answering questions, and, most importantly, making sure that participants could actually understand and apply what they learned.

From initially being cautious about public speaking to taking responsibility for delivering a community first aid workshop, she is gradually learning that leadership is not simply about standing in front of an audience. It means being willing to take responsibility, serve others, and turn the knowledge and skills one possesses into meaningful action for the community.

The participation of 9 youth attendees also highlighted an important message: health and safety education is not only an adult responsibility. Helping young people learn how to protect themselves, help others, and gradually become future contributors to community health and safety is equally important.

We sincerely thank every community member who participated in this workshop, YouGood Education for the active support and assistance, and everyone who has encouraged and supported this initiative.

This is only the beginning of the YGIS Community Preventive Health Initiative.

In the future, we will continue exploring topics including Aquatic Safety & Drowning Prevention, Winter Sports & Ski Safety, and Fall Prevention for Seniors, bringing preventive health education and practical safety knowledge into our community.

Through one small action at a time, we hope to help more people gain the ability to protect themselves and help others — while empowering young people to turn their passion and knowledge into a meaningful force for their community.

Protect lives through learning. Create changes through action.
