Helping families build awareness and learn practical emergency preparedness skills
To improve community awareness and emergency preparedness among families, especially youth, the YGIS Youth Volunteer Organization hosted a free public workshop titled “Preparing Families for Natural Disasters.”
The workshop focused on common natural disasters that families may encounter in daily life, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding, strong winds, and extreme weather conditions. Participants learned about the potential impacts of different types of disasters, as well as essential safety measures to take before, during, and after such events.
A key focus of the session was family emergency preparedness, helping participants understand how to create a family emergency plan, prepare basic emergency supplies, identify safe sheltering strategies, and establish effective communication plans within the household.
“While natural disasters cannot always be prevented, being prepared in advance can help families respond more calmly and effectively in emergencies,” the organizers said. They hope that through youth-led community initiatives like this, more young people will gain practical safety knowledge and share it with their families and communities.
The event took place on August 15, 2026, from 4:30to 5:30PM at the Jasper Place Library Meeting Room and was led by YGIS Youth Leader Allen Cui
The workshop was offered as a free community event, and snacks were provided for participants. Youth were encouraged to actively engage in community service, while also developing responsibility, leadership skills, and stronger community connections.
