[Edmonton, Alberta] — Youth Global Impact Society (YGIS) is excited to announce a new youth-led learning initiative, “Disasters and Society,” featuring five lesson modules prepared and presented by YGIS youth leader Allen Cui and other high school students.
Given the recent flooding and thunderstorms affecting Edmonton, understanding how disasters affect people around the world differently is growing more important than ever. Over the course of two weeks, participants will explore how disasters can affect individuals, families, and communities—and why some communities recover more quickly than others.
Through these five interactive learning modules, participants will learn about:
🌪️ Different types of natural and human-made disasters
🏘️ Understanding how vulnerability affects disasters
🤝Learning about who is more vulnerable to disasters
🛡️ Long-term impacts
🌍 Rebuilding after disasters
Disasters and Society will run from August 24 to September 5, 2026, with five topics offered through a flexible, learn-at-your-own-pace online format.

This initiative allows high school students to turn their knowledge into action while helping others better understand disasters, preparedness, community resilience, and the important role society plays before, during, and after a disaster.
